Choose NordVPN's desktop app when you want a VPN connection for the computer's internet traffic beyond the browser. Consider its browser extension when you deliberately need browser-only coverage. The two options solve different problems; a changed IP address in one browser does not establish that every app on the computer uses the VPN.
NordVPN's app-versus-extension guide distinguishes the device app from the proxy extension for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Your subscription includes access to both. Pick the scope you need rather than paying for another subscription to switch between them.
Browser-only coverage versus device-app coverage
Imagine that you browse in Firefox while a separate email client and a backup app run in the background. A browser extension is a choice about Firefox; it should not be treated as confirmation about those other programs.
Now consider someone who wants a VPN connection only for a particular browsing session and wants the rest of the computer's workflow to stay separate. Browser-only scope may fit that intention, provided they understand its limits.
This is the first decision to make before comparing extras or counting server locations. Write down the applications you want covered, including a second browser you occasionally open. That list gives you a practical way to choose.
When the browser extension makes sense
The extension can suit a browser-focused workflow, especially when you cannot install a device app. NordVPN says its extension does not require administrator rights; a managed computer may still restrict extension installation, so check your workplace policy.
NordVPN also documents website exclusions and browser features. An excluded website falls outside that extension's protected connection. Treat an exception as a deliberate choice, not as a way to make every broken website work without checking why it fails.
For example, if a work website needs your usual network route, first establish whether your organization permits a personal VPN at all. A convenient browser setting does not override company access rules.
When the desktop app is the better fit
Start with the app when your intended coverage includes activity outside the browser, such as a standalone mail client or other desktop software. Check the features for your operating system rather than assuming every app version has identical settings.
On Linux, the distinction matters for exclusions too. NordVPN's split-tunneling documentation describes network allowlists rather than Windows-style application selection. If your practical issue is a printer or NAS, use our local network access guide instead of switching products without diagnosing it.
For installation details, see Ubuntu Desktop, Fedora, or the broader OS compatibility guide.
Should you connect both at once?
NordVPN advises against using its app and browser extension simultaneously because they can interfere. Do not treat stacking them as an automatic privacy upgrade.
Choose one connection method for your test. If you switch methods, disconnect the first before connecting the second. Keep track of which product is active; otherwise a browser result can be difficult to interpret.
A check you can repeat after setup
Use this sequence as a basic functional check, not a full leak audit:
- Note which app or extension is connected and whether exceptions are configured.
- Compare the browser's reported public IP before and after connection, if you are comfortable doing a disconnected comparison.
- Retry the website or task that prompted the change.
- When using the desktop app, check its connection status separately.
- Do not infer another application's route from a browser-only test.
An IP change does not make signed-in accounts anonymous or establish protection against every tracking method. Decide what you need the connection to do, then check that particular behavior.
Before buying
For an existing subscriber, the useful next step is choosing and configuring the included product. For a new subscriber, check OS support and the upfront and renewal cost before purchasing. This guide does not measure speed or rank the two options by performance.

A coverage checklist for more than one browser
List every program whose network activity matters: your main browser, a second browser, a standalone email app and any background sync tool. Mark which connection method you intend to use for each. An extension installed in one browser is not evidence of coverage in the other programs.
Next, list website or network exceptions. A successful IP check on an included website says nothing about an excluded one. Keep one connection method active while checking so that the result has a clear explanation.
Does an extension replace the Linux VPN app?
Only when browser-only scope meets your requirement. For the native app, follow our Ubuntu setup guide or Fedora guide. If the requirement is to keep a printer reachable while using that app, use the local network guide rather than assuming a browser setting controls the printer.
